Benefits of Using Thermoset Composites

Posted by Ron Poff on Sep 15, 2016 3:20:00 PM

Thermoset composite parts are typically made from epoxy or polyester resins and (most commonly) reinforced with glass fibers. Depending on the application, polyester resin systems can be cured to be softer and more flexible or harder and more brittle. Polyester composites are used across a wide variety of consumer and industrial products from bathroom showers to auto body panels to boat hulls. In the electrical industry, thermoset composites have a dielectric advantage, helping drive usage for both arc and track resistance.

Pros and Cons of Thermoset Injection Molding

Posted by Ron Poff on Sep 8, 2016 3:20:53 PM

Weighing the pros and cons of the molding process for your composites can help you determine whether it's the right choice for your project needs. Creating a plastic or composite part requires raw material to be heated and poured into a mold that has been created specifically for that part. The four most common types of molding processes are:

The Death of Thermoset Composites Has Been Greatly Exaggerated

Posted by Ron Poff on Jul 28, 2016 12:58:41 PM

While it may seem recent, the quiet war between thermoset composites and thermoplastics has been waged since the late 1980’s. Plastics engineers have debated the benefits and pointed out the weaknesses of each as fiercely as a couple computer geeks debating Microsoft versus Linux. The battles will continue, and the thermoplastics folks will say that composites are going the way of the dodo bird, but the truth is that both materials have their place in the world and thermoset composites are far from dead.

3 Most Common Thermoset Composite Engineering Applications

Posted by Ron Poff on Jul 20, 2016 10:04:00 AM

Thermoset composite use spans multiple industries in both commercial/industrial and residential applications. When looking at engineering applications for thermosets, Martin Starkey, director of Gurit Automotive said it best at a recent Automotive Composites Conference and Exhibition (ACCE). He pointed out that “given the many forms of resins and reinforcements, composites are ‘infinitely tailorable for any application,’ but deciding on the right mix and the right process, given that huge range of possibilities, can be a challenge.” Common applications that utilize thermosets include; aerospace and automotive, commercial and residential construction, and appliance and electrical.
